How ConAgra Foods Falls Short with Food Safety

The entire industry acknowledges the most important aspect of food safety is prevention. The Food Safety Modernization Act identifies their highest priority concerning food safety is prevention. ConAgra Foods who owns 44% of Ardent Mills(which is a merger that includes ConAgra Mills, my previous employer) continues to defend a plant manager and several department supervisors at one of their Pennsylvania mills that blatantly disregarded their most serious responsibility, the prevention of intentional contamination. My belief is anyone in the food industry that chooses to ignore protocol that protects our food supply should be removed from any position of authority that allows them to make food safety decisions. The main question I have is “Why are these people still employed by Ardent Mills, ConAgra Mills or ConAgra Foods. Without getting into to much detail these managers put ConAgra Foods one step away from being the next Peanut Corporation of America. Here’s other views from two different companies in the food industry(Mission Foods and Golden State Foods)that make food safety their highest priority.

  • “Mission’s Statement: Food Safety is Everyone’s Job”
  • “we want employees to see that they are a respected part of the food safety and quality assurance process”
  • “Empowerment at Mission means employees are decision makers”
  • “when an employee points out a problem or makes the bold decision to shut down a line due to a food safety concern, the plant’s Quality Champion publicly rewards them”

“according to Bob Jorge, President of Distribution at Golden State Foods(GSF) food safety comes down to one decidedly low-tech thing:people. You can have all the technology available, but if you don’t have well trained and committed people, you can fall short in an industry where failure can literally mean customer’s lives”

CONAGRA HAD A WELL TRAINED AND COMMITTED EMPLOYEE. THE REWARD FOR BEING COMMITTED AND ACCOUNTABLE AT CONAGRA FOODS WAS NOT RECOGNITION. IT WAS TERMINATION. IS THAT A COMPANY THAT MAKES THEIR CUSTOMER’S LIVES A PRIORITY?opinion.
